Alumni Directory in Progress

St. John's
College
is working with Harris Connect in producing an alumni directory scheduled
for publication in March 2009. Over the next several months, you may receive
postcards, emails or phone calls from Harris asking for updated contact information.
We would appreciate your cooperation in updating your contact information. All
updates are returned to St. John's so that our database remains current.
Harris Connect is only collecting information for purposes of the directory. Your
information will not be released to any third parties. You decide whether
or not your personal information is published in the directory-make your wishes
clear to the representative with whom you speak. The directory is a great way to stay connected to the St. John's College alumni community!

The email from them about the info ended up going to my spam box and was deleted; it took me way too long to figure out where to go - so for anyone as disorganized as myself: The number to verify your info is: 1-800-942-1998 and the website to add info, photos, etc. is: http://www.alumniconnections.com/alumni_members/mylisting/index.html. They will ask you to buy, or commit to buying, a copy when you call; apparently it won't be available for you to purchase at a later time. It's approximately $80 soft cover (more for hardcover) which is a little steep for me personally. I asked if I could see a blueprint or example of what the book would look like before committing but it seems that is not available.

The representative with whom I spoke was resistant to omitting information I did not wish to have published.

I was going to call the number given in the postcard I received, assuming it was from the college and wondering why I should call to verify the information you have that I have kept up to date for 40 years. I seem to have misplaced the card, so I thought I would find the phone number here. But NO! Now that I know it's not a regular St. John's Alumni Register like we have received before but more likely one of those things like my high school suckered me into buying, maybe I won't bother to call.

It didn't help matters that the email from Harris looked like spam: cheap, grainy, asking to click a link to 'verify information.' This is not the way to handle this type of project in the modern era. And I thought I was connected to the St. John's alumni community, both through this site and the many mailings I receive. Neither the announcement above nor the e-mail from Harris provided me with any insight into why I should want to cooperate. I'm at a loss.

OOPS! That was off the top of my head...describing what I'd have done, and may have done without noticing it. I've just discovered the unread "Official Looking" email dated the 11th that arrived while I was gearing up for Hurricane Ike. The entire process seems sinister....more, later.

Spam filter alerted me and I deleted it based on sender without even reading the subject line.

I agree with Kevin. I get spam -- and scam-spam -- e-mails by the dozens every day. I actually came to this site to get Ms. Matson's e-mail address (which was not on the contact e-mail), in order to e-mail her for verification. Now, imagine that e-mail multiplied by hundreds of alumni who want to find out whether they're being scammed! We really need to get the initial request from the college, not from the contractor.

An email coming from the stjohnscollege.edu or sjca.edu domain would have been a much better way than one from harrisconnect.com. The first rule of online security is to verify domains before giving private information. An email from a St. John's domain directing Alumni to Harris would have been much more reassuring. Fortunately this news blurb is on the Alumni front page or I would have simply deleted the email and assumed it was a phising scam.
